Almost everyone who has to drive in the winter has a story or two about losing control on the road. Ice and snow can be dangerous. Black ice and other hazards are hiding out of sight and some accidents are unavoidable. There are plenty of things we can do to make sure we’re staying safe.
Of course, making sure our car is healthy and in working order is the best thing we can do. Good tires and responsive brakes will go a long way towards keeping you and others safe. Other than practicing safe driving habits is there anything else you can do? Some people might suggest using tire chains, but are they necessary? Let’s see if they are.
Are Tire Chains Necessary?
The biggest thing to know about tire chains is whether or not they are legal. Every locality will have different rules and regulations about their use. So, first, you need to check what those rules are. Once you do, it’s all about recognizing when the right time to use chains is. If used improperly, then you could do serious damage to your car, the tires, and the road.
Tire chains are typically employed when there is a layer of snow or ice on the road. If you plan on using tire chains, you should be prepared to remove them at some point during your trip. You also shouldn’t drive too fast, especially around corners, when you have chains on. Tire chains will give you more grip and power, but they need to be used carefully.
