Be prepared and remain cautious
- Check your tires consistently. Getting stranded with a flat tire is an experience that no one wants to experience, but it’s even worse when it’s snowing. Having properly inflated tires will help you avoid getting stranded in the snow. Check your tire pressure every two weeks to ensure that they are at the proper level. Your tire loses 1 psi of pressure for every 10 degrees that the temperature drops.
- Take it slow. When driving on the road, be sure to drive slower so that you can better handle a patch of ice and slippery conditions. It’s also good to accelerate and decelerate slowly. This will help you to avoid losing traction or control.
- Increase your following distance. During dry conditions, you typically follow the three to four second rule for being behind the vehicle ahead of you. When conditions are slippery due to snow or ice, you should increase your following distance to about six to eight seconds. Increasing your distance can help avoid a collision in case you need to brake suddenly.
